He first gained fame as the star, with Parker Stevenson, of The Hardy Boys Mysteries (1977-79) and as a chart-topping pop singer ("Da Doo Ron Ron"). Today, he is a prolific writer-producer whose best-known TV series, American Gothic (1995-96), was short-lived but critically acclaimed. Mind you, Cassidy hasn't entirely abandoned acting. In 1993, he costarred on Broadway with his half-brother David, another former teen idol, in the musical Blood Brothers. Yet he says he prefers to work behind the scenes.
"I think temperamentally I'm more writerly than I am actorly," muses Cassidy, 39. "Even when I was a kid working on The Hardy Boys, I was always much more interested in hanging out with the writers and producers than the other actors. I like actors. But by the nature of their work, they have to be very self-involved. Whereas writers are kind of looking at the big picture. They're reaching out to people to find out about their lives.
