You're Right!
Much of the success of GARGOYLES is owed to Stan Winston, who devised the elaborate gargoyle costumes. While obviously suits, the design is still legitimately creepy as hell (that's a technical description), and the portions of the film where the gargoyle suits are shown in slow motion have real power. Too often, however, GARGOYLES sacrifices plot and mood for mindless action, such as the car chase in the desert.
It's not that the plot isn't well thought out, it's just that it skips a few steps in telling, so that as a whole the film never completely jells. It's still interesting from a historical aspect, however, as it was very intense for television at the time it was first broadcast.
