This distinguished actor began as a comedian, moving into a sidekick role for other comedians such as Fred Allen, Edgar Bergen, and Bert Lahr. While serving in World War II, he was hit by shrapnel (leaving him with a slight limp) at Omaha Beach during the Normandy landing. After the war he found much work on Broadway, both as a dramatic and comic actor. He is best known, however, for his role as Norton in a classic '50s TV sitcom. Later, personal problems caused him to leave the Broadway run of Neil Simon's The Odd Couple. He soon returned to work as an actor, going on the win the "Best Actor" Oscar in 1974. He has also won several Emmys for his work on TV. His film appearances were few and far between before the mid-'70s, when he began to make movies fairly regularly.
